Introduction

In college, I was at a dinner party when I confidently declared, “Red is going to be in this fall.”

One of my friends immediately asked, “Brother, how do you know that?”

I explained that fashion trends don’t come from nowhere—they come from a system of fashion shows known as Fashion Week.

These shows set the foundation for what to expect to be on sale in the upcoming season.

He knew of fashion week, but I don't think he fully understood it.

After I explained it to him, he understood how following New York Fashion Week can help you:

  • Shop Smarter

  • Save Time

  • Impress Your Friends

But, before you can reap the benefits, you'll have to understand the traditional fashion business model.

Context - The Fashion Business Model

The majority of the fashion industry operates on a wholesale business model.

This means that fashion brands like Calvin Klein sell their clothes to retailers like Macy's, who then sell these items to customers.

Fashion shows are used to generate buzz around a brand's future clothing and create a line of department stores ready to buy the trendiest clothes for their customers.

Orders are placed several months in advance to give fashion brands enough time to manufacture garments to meet the retailer’s demands.

This is why you'll see clothes for Fall 2025 being shown at New York Fashion Week in Spring 2025.

Fashion Week isn’t just for entertainment—it’s the kickoff to a six-month-long production and sales cycle.

How Fashion Week can help you

Fashion shows aren't just for industry insiders—they're a powerful tool for anyone who wants to dress in style.

By seeing the clothes in advance, you can:

  • Plan Your Wardrobe: Organize your closet so in-style clothes are easy to access.

  • Make Smarter Clothing Purchases: If you know what’s going to be in, you can only buy stylish clothes.

  • Stay Ahead of the Curve: Fashion Week is a sneak peek of what will be in style.

The best thing is you don't even have to watch fashion shows to reap the benefits!

I rarely watch fashion shows.

Instead, I view photos of the shows on Vogue Runway and Instagram.

If you need somewhere to start, I’d recommend Ralph Lauren, Louis Vuitton, and Calvin Klein.

These shows are easy to understand and predictive of major trends.

Conclusion

Fashion Week isn’t just for designers and editors—it’s for everyone!

Understanding its importance allows you to:

  • Save Time/Money on Clothing

  • Dress in Style with Confidence

  • Look Forward to the Next Season
